These paintings were completed over three years and with inspiration from three different seasons, spring, summer and fall. A winter series will be appearing in 2015.
I am inspired to assess the beauty of the natural and the created environment of the Outer Cape and to express that on board or canvas in the mood that is present. This place can appear bright and alive or dull and quiet, depending on the day, the weather, the color of the sky. My choice of what to paint is inspired to catch the eye of the visitor or long term resident, hopefully expressing the immediate as well as the enduring, often subtle beauty.
Pet Portraits
The dunes on the Outer Cape are an ever-shifting landscape of form and color. Most of these paintings were done in 2012 and 2013. The dunes are a muse, but a challenging one. I find capturing the essence of them daunting in that they are so vast and they leave this viewer feeling a bit overwhelmed, as if we are on the surface of a planet that is foreign and unpredictable.
Ah, horses. They are a subject I've been studying since I was a young girl. I was a care taker and groomer for harness-racing horses as an adolescent and got to know their instincts personally.
In 2013 I spent some time in Tucson, AZ on a property with four horses. I got to work immediately, studying their personalities and moods, and painting in the studio attached to the barn. Within three weeks I painted portraits of all four horses. The paintings were acquired shortly after by the owners.
In 2014 I stayed in a small town near Santa Fe, NM and painted a few paintings, some of which moved on without my photographing them. The goats and the black horse are two that I captured before being purchased by the owner of the Cerrillos' Broken Saddle Riding Company.
This collection of 5" x 5" oil paintings on wood block was inspired by the winter scenes around Provincetown, Massachusetts. In addition, I painted seven small paintings of Atlantic whales in which 10% of the proceeds will go to The Center for Coastal Studies. These paintings have all been sold.
As I continually explore how to express my experience of the color and light of the outer cape, I move to more abstraction and more use of the palette knife and other tools. With the ever changing tides comes infinite possibilities for this work on wood panel, board, canvas and linen in all shapes and sizes.
